Is Reiki Flaky?

Updated: Dec 20, 2023

I used to think so!

I thought Reiki was some vague practise that anyone could do by simply handing over a wad of cash, and turning up for a few hours on a weekend. After which, they could set up as a practitioner, and make healing claims with little credibility or experience. The ease with which one could learn then practise Reiki devalued it for me. I was never drawn to it at all!

In January of this year, a metaphysical teacher I had over 20 years ago came into my awareness during a meditation. I decided to reach out to her not knowing if she would still be around, but she was and she replied. She invited me over for a catch up, and I asked if I could do some more learning with her. In the end it was decided that I would work my way through the 38 lessons of the course she had designed to reach Reiki Mastery. I am not sure why we picked that, but we did! She has taken me through it like an apprenticeship. A gradual release of information. I have seen her fortnightly for around 90 minutes at a time. She imparts the next lesson and peppers it with personal anecdotes, tips, and energetic techniques. She instructs me to practise what I have learnt in the weeks between lessons then report back my experiences with any questions. This has meant a gradual unfolding of the teaching, and a deeper grounding and understanding of the practise. Whilst it may not suit everyone to do it this way, it has been a solid and worthwhile experience for me.

What has unexpectedly unfolded is another chapter of my spiritual journey. This year of Reiki has been a gateway for greater intuition, a deepening of skills and gifts, greater clarity around what I want to do with my life, and an opening of abilities that have lain dormant.

The best part is, we all have access to this Universal Life Force energy, to Light, to Source, to God, to Creation. Reiki training and atunement is just one way we can start to connect with this flow. It is a way we can learn how to interact with universal energy, and how to use it for ourselves and others. Practising Reiki can help us to be more in tune with ourselves and the world around us. It can facilitate connection to our higher selves and to our intuition, while gaining access to knowledge that goes beyond the physical realm. At it's core, the practise of Reiki is centred around the personal relationship we can develop with the Divine.

Whether it is used as an individual spiritual development pathway, a healing modality to help family and friends, or for professional practise and teaching, there is more to Reiki than I realised. I now think that with a great teacher and consistent practise wonderful things are possible with Reiki. It has been a beautiful addition to my life, and I certainly got more than I bargained for!
