Dear Covid, Thanks for the hair loss, not!

Updated: Dec 20, 2023

I tested positive to Covid on July 8th 2022. The acute infection initially reminded me of the countless times I had been sick with tonsillitis as a kid. I felt nauseated, lethargic, feverish, had appetite loss, headache, a dry cough, and sore throat that became increasingly more painful as the days went on. The fevers were bad, everyday for 5 days and nights. Waking up soaking wet and shivering. The fatigue was something else. I can only liken it to being anaesthetised. The urge to sleep was hectic. I could not seem to keep my eyes open for long, I just didn't have the energy. Then came the sinus issues and phlegmy cough. It was not much fun. After seven days the symptoms started easing and as that was the recommended isolation period at the time, I figured I would be okay to return to work. Big mistake. I was not okay, and returning too early has delayed my healing and recovery process.

I have struggled with fatigue ever since, though to be fair, I was tired going into it! I have also had tinnitus since July. The first few weeks after were the worst, like traipsing through molasses to function. I felt feint, dizzy, had thick brain fog, struggled to take a full breath, and had heart palpitations. I had not felt so wiped out since being incapacitated with Lyme Disease, Epstein-Barre, and mould illness in 2017, and it scared me. I worked long and hard to recover from those complex and chronic health issues, and had zero interest in going back down that road of suffering. A month post infection, my integrative GP ran some tests and found a number of things not right with my bloodwork. We supplemented for those, and I went back to see my Bioresonance therapist. Finally, about 8 weeks post infection I felt a lot better!

Then, by the end of September, my hair started falling out!! In frightening amounts, by the brushful in fact (see picture above). My pony tail reduced in thickness by more than half. There was hair all over the house, from the sink, to the kitchen bench, through the washing, and even in the vegetable crisper. I went back to the doctor for more tests, she widened her scope and found more levels out of whack. It turns out hair loss 2 - 3 months post Covid is a thing for some people!

So it's back to rebuilding and repairing my body with gut healing bone broths, nutrient dense food, animal protein, vitamins, minerals, and supplements. Alkalising through green juices, powders, and leafy greens. Staying away from gluten, dairy and sugar. Making healthy, healing food choices, being a bit more protective of my energy, managing stress, staying well hydrated, and getting enough sleep.

I do not recommend Covid. For me, it was a nasty, stealth pathogen, and it has set me back with my health. Though, I have recovered faster from it than I did the health issues I had years ago as I was able to access good help earlier. Most people have had Covid by now but if you haven't, avoid it if you can! I know the government is recommending shorter isolation times, and expectations around the illness seem to be changing, it's being downgraded as a mild illness but this is not everyone's experience, it certainly hasn't been mine.

If it was nothing more than a regular cold, or flu for you, count yourself lucky! It is extremely debilitating for others and for that reason I encourage you to continue taking really good care of yourself, and consider others where you can. Practise good hygiene, and stay out of circulation if you are sick, until you are all the way better. The more vulnerable amongst us truly thank you for doing that.

Have you had Covid? How was your experience? Did it take you longer than you thought it would to recover? Are you all the way better? I'd love to know.
